The Bluebell King, his father, had torn her apart to get to Hugh, and Hugh had run. He'd done nothing to save his mother, the one constant in the ten years of his life.
The guilt had hollowed him out, carving a void that echoed with her final words: "Run, my little sapling, run deep into the world of men where he cannot follow." But the Bluebell King had followed, in his way. Not with his physical form, no—the ancient pact forbade him from crossing the boundary stones—but with his influence, his whispers, his promises. Every night since they'd fled, Hugh had dreamed of crowns made from moonlight and thrones carved from living wood. Every morning, he'd woken with dirt beneath his fingernails and petals caught in his hair.
