He spares a glance at Dustin, who seems to be sitting up already. He’s okay, then. Didn’t hurt himself with the fall. Good. That’s good. That’s all the concern he can spare at the moment.
“I’m done,” he repeats, choking around his emotions as he storms away.

The words are out there now and he can’t unsay them, can’t explain, can’t blame the intrusive thoughts this time for twisting what happened trying to find someone to blame. It’s out there. He didn’t mean it.
He can see the moment he draws blood.
It’s different than before, with the power surge or with his car. Steve doesn’t even bother to bite back. Dustin knows him. He knows the way his face closes off, how his throat works a little extra, how he blinks looking away. ‘Hurt’ doesn’t begin to cover it. Steve believes him.

"Same difference. I don't know shit about it."
She huffs, frustrated, bouncing on her feet with anger, a teenager again. An annoyed teenager, at that. God, no wonder she and Dustin are friends.
"It's not that. It's... Lucas said... Lucas said you helped him train. For his basketball trials last year."

Steve works his jaw, eyes distant, then turns to him.
“You die, I die.”
And just like that, Dustin is thirteen again. He remembers. The elevator, the Russians, the rush of certainty through his entire body as he realized he couldn’t just stand back and watch Steve die, that surviving that would be worse. (And, oh, he was right).

Summary
Once the initial fear has trickled from his blood Dustin actually registers what was gonna be used to bludgeon him with. A baby pink alarm clock, the minute hand still diligently ticking over. “Is.. Is that Nancy’s clock?”
Steve lets out what could be a sigh of relief, lowers the clock with one hand and uses the other to run through this hair. Then, seemingly taking in Dustin’s question, he looks down at the clock in his hands like he’d forgotten he’d grabbed it to begin with. Clearly it was the nearest thing next to him when Dustin woke him with all his noise. He feels a little guilty now. Steve sputters and then hisses “I.. yes? I thought there was something in the house!”

Or the fact she can now touch the Phantoms. Maybe it's the lingering memory of one particular pair of hands that's keeping her awake, maybe it's the fear that it was a one time thing.
