Rumi has always been a bad beta. She knows this intrinsically, as if it’s a fact etched into her skin as permanently as her patterns.
It isn't for a lack of effort. She tries to be a good meditator, a strong glue to hold them all together. She tries to do all of the right things; she leaves food and blankets outside of their doors during ruts and handles it patiently when the alpha posturing gets out of control.
She tries, and she knows that it isn’t enough, because if it was, there wouldn’t be this awful chasm in her chest. The constantly underlying want that settles under her skin whenever she’s with Mira and Zoey, or even when she's without them for too long.
Betas aren’t supposed to want. They aren’t supposed to have this terrible aching feeling that something is missing.

“Don’t be,” Max breathes, and she isn’t sure if it’s the winter chill, the late hour, or El’s proximity that gives her the courage to say: “You can…do it again. If you want.”
There’s a moment of utter silence during which Max begins to ponder the absolute depth of her own stupidity, but then—lips fall to her cheek. El lingers, breathing out against Max’s skin.

Just, there's definitely something that she specifically didn't want you to see, so there's a chance it maybe has something to do with you." He widens his eyes meaningfully at her, and El frowns, not understanding.
"You think she has a secret from me?"
"Yeah," Mike says slowly, and again El feels like they're having two separate conversations. "Like, maybe a romantic secret?"
El frowns. "The girl from the diner is not a secret, though," she points out, "I was there."
Mike groans, exasperated. "Not her! I'm saying Max likes you, El."
Living with Max has its ups and downs. Only most of it is El's fault.

Summary
Aurelia, who has been standing stoically at Beatrice’s side, flips her ears back in unease. “Where’s her daemon?” she asks.
They glance around the room, hoping to find her simply hiding, now curled up asleep due to the sedative. But Ava’s daemon is nowhere to be found.
Beatrice’s stomach twists. “You said she was dead. Her daemon… she would have…” Turned to Dust and disappeared, she can’t bring herself to voice aloud, horrified.
The one who bears the sacred Halo does not just become the Warrior Nun - they also become Adriel's daemon. Ava is unique, because unlike every Halo Bearer before her, she was resurrected from the dead when the damn thing apparently 'chose' her. And chose not to resurrect her daemon alongside her.
Is it any wonder that Beatrice and her daemon Aurelia become her primary support system?
