He considered turning back, pretending he hadn’t seen them, but the sound of a chair scraping against the floor cut through the deafening silence.“Hyunjin-ah.” Chan, the student council president, gestured at the vacant chair, “Take a seat.”

Summary

Bobby is now in front of him introducing him to some of the other firefighters, but Eddie can hardly hear whatever it is they’re saying because he can’t take his eyes off the man standing like a statue a few feet away, with wide deer-caught-in-the-headlights-eyes, open mouth, and white as a sheet of paper. The man who abandoned him and his son three years ago. The man who is still the love of his goddamn life. Captain Nash is waving him over, and Evan finally starts moving, slow and clumsy, like a zombie.
“Eddie, this is Buck. Buck meet Eddie Diaz,” Bobby says.
“Buck?” Eddie asks dumbfounded, still not believing what is happening.
