Summary
The last to go were her eyes, her kind eyes that had comforted him until the very end of her illness. Throughout it all, she’d looked at him with love, even when she forgot who he was.
But now there was nothing there, just pits of a disfigured skull, and he felt his own tears begin to slide as his mother stood unrecognizable before him.
A soul-piercing shriek erupted from her infinite mouth, rattling his bones and pulling him apart from the inside. It was a scream of grief, fury, and horror that made his lungs clench until there was not a single bit left within him. He tried to fight the suffocating feeling, but the screaming just wouldn’t stop, and he couldn’t leave.
So instead, he joined her, throwing his head to the sky and letting it echo out of his empty body. The leaves shook, and the river raged, swirling around and ramming into them, but it did nothing but increase the strength of their cry.
He’d never before felt so powerful and powerless at the same time.
