“Mike?”
It’s a whisper, but it’s filled with something so earnest, so true, that it strikes through Mike’s very core. Rips apart at his chest, with the familiarity of it. The way his name sounds in this younger Will’s throat, soft and gentle and so, so relieved.
“Will,” Mike says back, matching his whisper. “Hey, Will, it’s me. Mike.”
“But—” Will frowns. He’s so unsure, Mike wants to cry for him. “You’re so tall.”

Or, when Will is possessed by Vecna and trapped in his own mind, Mike is the only one who can save him.

Summary
“You like it,” he teased. The words tasted the way jumping off a cliff felt. His stomach swooped up towards his heart and his pulse maybe skipped a beat. Will’s eyes narrowed at him, and his face was impossible to read.
“I guess I do, or we wouldn’t be friends this long,” he snorted, and broke their eye contact, focusing back on the path ahead of them and walking a few paces ahead. The word friend felt like a small dagger, but the way Will’s voice shaped it dulled the edges.
“Best friends,” Mike corrected, picking up his pace so they were still right next to each other. So he could pretend the way his fingers glanced over the back of Will’s hand was an accident.
Mike refuses to watch Will die again, no matter how determined he is to sacrifice himself. Vecna has other plans.

Summary
He’d stared at Will without really seeing him, so caught up in his own thoughts—a constant, monotonous beat of oh my God, I’m alive. Oh my God, Will has powers. Oh my God, he saved me.
And then—
Oh my God, he’s beautiful.
The thought had stopped him short, had landed with a soft and devastating clarity.
Beautiful.
That single word had broken something open within him, something he’d spent years reinforcing with lock and chain and prayer and denial.
After Will saves Mike from the demogorgon at the MAC-Z, Mike finally lets himself acknowledge a truth he's been running from for years:
He is in love with Will Byers.
Now all Mike has to do is come to terms with that truth—especially when Joyce sees it too.

Summary
Mike’s forehead creases, and all Will wants is to reach up and smooth it over. “Now… You know…”
“I don’t know,” Will says, and he absolutely doesn’t.
Mike sighs. “Maybe I don't either. It’s just-” he’s quiet for a long moment, collecting his thoughts. “It’s different. Everything’s different,” He takes a deep breath. “We’re different.”
Will’s heart is pounding out of his chest. “We? Like, everyone? Or… like, you and me?”
Mike purses his lips, studying Will’s face. He feels a weight on his knee, and looks down to see Mike’s hand stretched across the mattress to sit on top of it- only a few inches, but it feels like he’s reached over a gaping chasm, and somehow landed safely on the other side.
“Will?” His mom calls, knocking on the bedroom door. “We’re ready.”
