Will's a true sorcerer. Right after the truth comes to light in the middle of a battlefield, Mike Wheeler finds himself more amazed and enamored with Will than he'd like to admit. However, they don't have time to celebrate the peace, because not much time passes that Vecna comes back, determined to take what Will loves the most if he isn't by his side on this war. So the Demogorgons come too, taking his mother with them and trying to take Mike too. But despite his mother is now theirs, right before Mike enters the Upside Down, Will jumps and goes with him.
They're together now. In the Upside Down. They only had to rescue Will's mother, wherever she happened to be. But they're alone, too, with a long journey ahead of them. Mike knows nothing can go wrong. After all, the only thing Will has accepted is that now he has powers, right?

“Mike, I said I’m sorry!” Will called down the stairs as he shut and locked the basement door behind them before following down more gently. To say he was unhappy to be back in the Upside Down was an understatement, and to make matters worse, Mike had just caught him in a lie.

Losing Will was nothing new to Mike, happening more times than he'd be willing to admit, because really you shouldn't be losing a whole human being as often as Mike Wheeler lost Will Byers. Despite losing him once again and everything that came with it, Mike would rather die than leave him in the Upside Down. So what does Mike do? The most logical thing, of course.
He follows Will right into the hell that took him because he would follow Will anywhere.

Immediately post-Season 4, the gang are catching up and reuniting at Hopper's old cabin. Mike, who's been on the edge of a panic attack for the past few days, excuses himself to get some 'fresh air'- unbeknownst to anyone but Joyce, who still isn't fully up-to-date on the Vecna situation. After about 30 minutes, the group notices his absence and are immediately concerned. They can't find Mike anywhere in the surrounding area, but they find the exact thing they were dreading; a small gate.
Mike finds himself in the Upside-Down, but the circumstances are strange. Vecna is nowhere to be seen and the area around him is completely barren. It's an elaborate plot to torment Mike with his greatest fears; forcing him to relive his own worst memories with his family and friends by his side.

The places where her eyes used to be were hollowed out. A chunk of her face was missing, starting near the eyebrow and extending to below her chin. It oozed blood sluggishly, and purulent discharge was mixed with it. The plasma dripped from the healing wound, stretching from her ear to the side of her mouth. Half of her lips were missing, and her hospital gown was covered in brown blood.
"How did you die?" Mike asked.
"They killed me when I couldn't use the powers the serum gave me," She responded, blood gushing out of her mouth with every word, adding to the mess of her dress, "And they'll do the same to you if you don't figure out how to control the thing inside you."
