He thinks about what would happen if he told Will the real reason he couldn’t sleep. "I know I’m just having a hard time being next to you every day, and wanting things boys shouldn’t want. I’m trying to figure out how it’s possible to handle wanting to be around you like a leech on the back of your arm, while simultaneously hoping that you never look at or touch me again, so I don’t do something stupid like entertain the idea of you looking at or touching me more."
Mike huffs out a breath. Yeah, far too revealing for either of us tonight, he thinks.

“We’re almost there,” Mike said softly.
“This better be good,” Will grumbled. Mike swallowed anxiously, but said nothing in response.
“Okay, stop here,” Mike said as they neared their destination. He took a deep breath and took his hands off of Will’s shoulders. “Open.”
Will’s eyes blinked open, and it took a moment for them to adjust to the sunbeams streaming through the trees. It then took another moment for his brain to catch up with what was in front of him.

"Tears stained the end of the letter. The Love flowed out. Mike didn't plan to write it. He had to reread it to even realise that he couldn't just sign off the letter like that. On another reread, Mike had also decided he couldn't send it to Will. And Mike stood by it. This was too much. Mike just wanted things to stay the same. Just to be normal.
So Mike tucked it between two cushions in Castle Byers and left, trying not to let the tears flood out. He didn’t want to have to explain that to Holly. This way, by fixing by Castle Byers, and by leaving the letter there, Mike would’ve fixed their friendship. At least, to himself."

WILL: You do…? Really? They said it wasn't true. That it was all a dream… That I'm… (slowly) not… really here.
MIKE: Who said that?
WILL: Are you real…?
MIKE: Of course I'm real. Who said that?
WILL: The Lost Souls. They said I'm one of them. They said I died in the Upside Down. Or… I'm… going to. Soon. I dunno.
MIKE: Well, that's bullshit. What do they know? (insistent) Will. You are here. (He cups Will's face in his hands.) And I love you.
WILL (welling up): Promise?
MIKE (nodding): I promise.

Will fumbled through his first aid kit. “Alright, c’mere, you look like Aragorn.”
“That’s not a bad thing.” Mike pointed out with a sly grin, scooting close to him.
“You’ve got blood everywhere. So definitely not HOT Aragorn.” Will corrected, before realizing exactly what he’d said, eyes widening.
“Not that-” Will swallowed. “I think-” he stopped and stared at the stuff he’d pulled from the bag.
“Let’s just. Get you cleaned up.” Will muttered, closing himself off. Shutting Mike out. Mike knew what that looked like.
Will used to do it, when Lonnie would get mad. Shut everything out. Mike hated it.
Did he mean what he'd said about Aragorn? Or was Mike overthinking it like always? Hope fluttered in his chest, hot and dangerous. He wanted to reach out and tell Will that it was fine, that he didn’t mind.
That he wasn’t alone. That he didn’t have to be alone.
But Mike Wheeler was a coward. So he didn’t say anything at all.
