Summary
October 1, 1989: Grace is well on her way to being completed by Sir Reginald Hargreeves and Dr. Pogo when breaking news reports 43 children being born from woman that were definitely NOT pregnant that morning. Once he's aware of the situation, Reginald rushes to buy as many of the babies as he can, bringing them to their new home one by one, despite being noticeably unqualified when it comes to caring for infants, even with Pogo's help. LUCKILY within 48 hours of successfully obtaining the first child, Reginald and Pogo finish the creation of their lifetimes; Mrs. Grace Hargeeves, a robot woman designed to look, act, and feel exactly like a real woman (and not just ANY woman, but Reginald's ex and Pogo's mother figure). What they don't realize, though, innocently introducing her the first baby, is that both Grace's share a strong maternal instinct, and rushing to complete the android woman had caused them to miss several essential sections of code which would have bound Grace to Reginald's will until he dies. This time around, Grace has free will, which means not only can she mother, dote upon, and spoil the kids all she wants, but she also had influence over the whole family... So, what is she going to do with it?

This fic is EVERYTHING. I love the exploration of trauma, especially from the perspective of someone aside from the victim. It’s an angle that’s rarely explored. I also adore the beautiful thing Nami and Usopp’s relationship blooms into despite their hardships. There is so much love and care for the topic being written about and the characters packed into this fanfic by the author and I, as a result, am full of love for this fanfic and its characters as well.
I would have liked to see more from the other SHs, but this was perfect anyway. Shoutout to Zoro, Robin, Chopper, and Franky. Sanji’s a hot mess, but I still love him too (and appreciate the way this fic handled him). It’s hard to do that without sounding preachy -to be clear, there is NOTHING wrong with making a clear stance on respecting woman, even if others find it annoying. It’s more from a writing perspective; we as the audience know Sanji’s flaws and don’t need to be told they're bad,but in-story, what does SANJI need to hear? And how can the crew help make him come to terms with it? Often times the way it’s handled is just way too on the nose, especially since Sanji canonically is aware of what other’s think of his actions, and doesn’t care.
Now that I think about it, that brings me to Zoro.
I love his (canon) character, don’t get me wrong. I understand why he does and says a lot of what he does, as well as the reasoning behind it. I just have more criticisms of the way he goes about things than most of the fandom. So I was really… not nervous but sort of “hm” (can’t think of a word right now) when he starts the premature “intervention”, let’s call it.
Often times with characters like him, in situations like this, it’s used to get characters like Usopp to “man up” and take equal responsibility for defending himself, etc. I was pleasantly surprised when Zoro stood up for Usopp (and Nami) without having Sanji listen just because of rank. I also ADORE the way you can see and feel his gentle love for his crew in the way he handles everything, from the aforementioned situation, to teasing Usopp, to, above all, his gentleness with Nami. Him and Robin are the emotional MVP’s. On the medical side, let’s not forgive Chopper! He and Usopp both went through it —vicarious trauma is REAL and I love this fanfic for discussing not only the toll it takes not just on loved ones, but also medics (yes, I know he’s both)!
I feel similarly with how Usopp DOES stand up for himself, because this is often where some sort of dramatic “prove yourself” moment happens for him in fanfics, and I don’t think it’s as realistic as this is. Above all I adored NAMI standing up for HERSELF against Sanji in the hotel! She said exactly what needed to be said!
To any Sanji lovers are reading this, I want to be clear that this is by no means a fic that bashes him. Everyone is flawed in this fic, and that’s what makes it beautiful. Some characters just appear more than others, so he comes to the forefront often. I loved the scene when he offers to “lower himself down” to Usopp’s “level” with damn near no hesitation, since that’s what he’d do for his friends to know peace.
On a side note, someone needs to sit down and tell the SHs that in a crew of 9, 3 of them getting kidnapped and grievously harmed in less than 2 years together is unacceptable😅. It’s gotta stop. I’m surprised the other’s didn’t do more… Luffy literally clapped Arlong just for making Nami cry back when they’d just met, and he’s done the same for Sanji (2x), Usopp (2x), Vivi, Skypiea, Robin, etc. Even if he doesn’t have anyone left to fight and has next to no idea what’s going on he usually gets outwardly upset seeing people wronged… Still, maybe even he knew that this was an area he couldn’t push Nami to be more open about.
The intimacy scenes between Nami and Usopp are so soft and beautiful, I literally don’t consider them smut -nothing wrong with smut, but here it just feels like the natural progression of things. I can be rather sex-averse, so I usually skip those type of scenes in romance fanfics (especially long ones).
If you’re like me and are weirdly squicked out by voyeurism, aside from the obvious 1st chapter (which is a completely different context that is not “intimate” in a carefree, loving, fun sense, but is only “intimate” in that it was a scene that no one should have had to see, let alone go through) there is nothing of that sort in this; the closest thing there is is Usopp in his boxers and Nami opening the door to some of the others.
Most importantly, I appreciate that this fanfic brings something that always bothers me, yet is almost never brought up: the reality of a woman on the seas, especially a neglected little girl like Nami. There’s no way it’s the 1st time it’s happened. Also the quiet way Nami’s “problem” was handled by those in the know. So much respect for her and the topic, by saying almost nothing at all.

It can't be the same as back then, Usopp is sure of it. So sure. He's fine.

I highly recommend this fanfiction. It’s very well written and pulls at your heartstrings. A lot of time and care went into it, and even the OCs (which I usually dislike reading) were amazingly written and fleshed out . Bravo to the author. If you love Usopp and the Straw Hat’s in general, this is a must read fanfic in my book.
I love the scenes with his mother and the Going Merry.

Absolutely beautiful, lovely fanfic. You can feel the love the author put into it in each and every word. I appreciate the time taken to actually consider the impact Usopp’s early life must/could have had on him. I have always had lots of thoughts about the way Usopp canonically doesn’t seem to be ‘allowed’ to be mad at Yassop. I understand it’s from the view of pirates but actions have consequences and not just for yourself, especially when you have a kid.
A moment that bothers me in canon is when Luffy asks Usopp if he’s mad at Yassop, and when Usopp says no Luffy says ‘good’ like that’s the only right answer. I don’t think Usopp needs to hate his father, but he left him and he needed an adult and it’s okay to have complex feelings about that. Combined with Luffy and Blanchina describing him as some super cool dude, it probably is one of the reasons Usopp’s self esteem is so bad.
I also have thought the Whitebeard pirates were PERFECT for Usopp, so imagine my surprise when I came across this fanfic! I’d recently come across that one tumblr series where Usopp joins the Whitebeard pirates with his uncle, and fell in love with that, so this was a definite diamond in the rough.
Every character is treated with love and respect and understanding (even Yassop). There’s so much to say and not enough words (or character limit left) to get it across. Every Usopp lover should read this. It’s a beauty of a fanfic, and I can only hope to write this well someday.
P.S. As an adopted person, I thought this found family angle was executed perfectly. The ripple affect in canon will be great… kind of want to scribble down my own take on how this could change things… I’ve been planning to write something with the Whitebeard family and the Strawhats for a while… we’ll see how many years THAT takes…
