!!not a story!! this is a thesis about captain america fanfiction, not a work of captain america fanfiction.
ABSTRACT:
In the last few decades, fanfiction has become an increasingly popular form of written media. Online fandom communities, which rally around shared interests and create content surrounding them, mediate characters, relationships, and plotlines through their creation and consumption of written fanwork. Young people especially engage with fanfiction in a creative and affective way in order to negotiate, analyze, and reimagine aspects of their shared media interest. One such media interest is that of Marvel superhero Captain America, who appears as a main character in both the Marvel Comics and the hugely popular Marvel Cinematic Universe film franchise. These two media sources, however, sometimes have very different representations of the character. In the case of the Captain America fandom, fanfiction acts as a locus of a reassimilation of these differing character representations. This thesis argues that Captain America fanfiction adds depth to a character wiped clean by movie makers and acts as a locus of reclamation, re-politicization, and identity exploration. -

“ Fuck,” he proclaims out loud.
A pigeon on the sidewalk across the street flutters away.
Another voice cuts through the cold. “You okay?”
Bucky looks up to see a silhouette on the fire escape two floors above him. Clearly, he had been swearing louder than he intended to.
The figure is clearly male, and built like a fucking brick house, but the light behind him makes any other features vague and indistinguishable.
“Uh, yeah,” Bucky says dumbly. “I just- I forgot my keys.”
“I’ll let you in.”
The silhouette disappears from view.
Bucky steps forward to retrieve his groceries from the steps of the building, and has just picked up the last can of cat food when the door opens. He looks up to meet the man who saved him from hypothermia.
And what a man it is.

Scott’s not really surprised to spot Ilya Rozanov backstage, getting lightly swarmed by a crowd of sound techs and hair and makeup crew. Even on the rare year that neither of them were getting any awards, the League always tried to get either him or Hollander, and preferably both, presenting something. And since Hollander was still out for the count and recovering up in Ottawa, that left Rozanov, standing awkwardly while a harried-looking woman straightened his bow-tie.

Hayden keeps mindlessly scrolling Instagram—a pantomime of paying attention, not really taking in anything that’s passing across his screen. Mind racing as a series of realizations wash over him.
Christ, no wonder Shane was so cagey about Lily. No wonder he didn’t want to introduce her to the guys.
Hayden would like to believe that everyone would be chill with it, but he could think of at least five guys off the top of his head that would a hundred percent take issue with Shane dating a trans woman. He can imagine, far too easily, the kind of slurs that would get thrown around the locker room if anyone ever found out. Towards Lily, sure, but towards Shane too—because Shane had to be gay, if his girlfriend had a dick, right?

Hayden feels like a complete asshole, all of a sudden. There’s just been too much going on to even think about Shane’s mystery girlfriend. “Shit, I should probably, like, call her, or something? I don’t know this girl at all, but Shane’s been obsessed with her for years. If she was watching the game, she would have seen him get hurt.”
“You don’t need to call her,” Rozanov says, and when Hayden glances at him, he still looks fucking miserable but now he’s rolling his eyes, a much more familiar expression of disdain on his face. “She’s sitting right here.”
