Summary
This is a fanfic of my own OC Beryl (Barrel) and the story of her journey, accompanying Thorin Oakenshield & Co. on the road to Erebor. The story follows all major plot points of the original novel by JRR Tolkien combined with the Peter Jackson film interpretations, BUT some scenes, dates, events have been altered in favor of enriching the story I wanted to write. SO please keep in mind, that while this work is based on the original media, it is not meant to be a recreation or copy by any means. All interpretations of Tolkien's original characters are influenced by the film adaptations, but are ultimately my own through their dialogue and relationships to my girl. I do not claim any rights to their names or likeness.
Because this fic follows the main storyline of The Hobbit, I do not feel the need to tag for violence, blood/gore, major character death, etc. What I will warn you about is the cursing and the *very few* sex/smut scenes throughout the parts. I know you all will probably want so much more once you get into it and all I gotta say is: Just wait.

Slowly the small Hobbit stood up to answer the door.
„Dwalin, at your service.“ A dwarf. A dwarf on her doorstep.
A dwarf she knew a long time ago. A dwarf who died in battle, proudly swinging his weapon.
With a blank stare she scanned the dwarf.
‚Oh Yavanna, how cruel of you‘
Another moment the hobbit stood in the half open door, slowly realizing what was happening. In her empty eyes a spark lit up, after a long and cold winter. A single teardrop ran down her cheek, breaking her numbness.
„You are alive?“ She wispered under her breath.

Finnick Took was an ordinary hobbit, who lived in an ordinary home, with her ordinary Uncle. They were well respected members of the community, who led quiet lives and never did anything unexpected at all.
There was a scheduled routine to their lives. Finny went to work and school, practicing her craft of carpentry. Her Uncle Bilbo worked in his garden, selling his produce in the local markets while she was away, and then they both returned to Bag End for the night. They ate dinner together before retiring to the sitting room while Finny painted and Bilbo read. And that was their lives, rinsed and repeated, happening like clockwork, sunup to sun down.
And Finny was satisfied with this.
Or so she thought.

Summary
Though not well known outside of the Shire, it has long since been the case that Hobbits cannot survive the loss of their soulmates once they choose to let the bond form, their grief Withering them away only days or weeks after their other half dies. Most Shire-folk refuse to take the risk, finding love elsewhere, but if this quest has proven anything, it's that Bilbo is not like most Shire-folk.
The battle is over, and Thorin is not dead. Bilbo seems to be Withering anyway.

Óin can't help but chuckle when he enters the healing halls to find Bilbo asleep next to Thorin. It's hardly the first time their Hobbit has found his way to Thorin's side since they moved from the battlefield to the mountain, supporting his One as Thorin slumbered on.
It was not the first time he'd found Bilbo sleeping by Thorin's side.
It was the first time Bilbo didn't wake.

Gandalf met her eyes with as forlorn an expression as she'd ever seen on his face. There was such sadness held there at the answer she knew he had to give.
"It would be a promise I cannot keep." He told her as kindly as he possibly could. "I'd rather not keep a father and his child from each other- a King and his heir even less so."
Billa looked away but didn't flinch when a warm, rough hand touched her shoulder offering comfort. She desperately needed it. She was so frightened.
"Did you love him?" She heard him ask. She clung to the sympathy in his voice and nodded as her eyes brimmed with tears.
"Do you still?"
The answer was barely a whisper- as small and secret as the fluttering heartbeat under her shaking hand.
"Yes."

"oh, hush, I look silly," Bilbo mustered a half-smile as Thorin rose to his feet and strode across the room to wrap his arms tightly around him from behind.
"silly? but never in my life, my heart," he put his chin on the top of Bilbo's head and his hands on his waist, humming in consideration and squeezing lightly. ]

Summary
With mounting worries of wolf and orc attacks in The Shire, the Thain calls upon an old agreement with Durin’s Folk of old— a marriage of convenience. Bilbo Baggins, the Thain’s grandson and Master of Bag End, represents the hobbits of The Shire while Thorin II Oakenshield, Heir Prince Under the Mountain, represents the dwarves of Erebor. Both must abide by this ancient agreement with the pressure of their families and for the betterment of their people.
Bilbo and Thorin will enter the courting of both cultures— Thorin will travel to the Shire for nine months, and then Bilbo to Erebor for nine months. All hope everything goes well...

Bilbo Baggins’ letter was different from all the others Thorin had received at that time.
First, Bilbo actually got his name right. Very little people cared to learn Thorin’s name those days, so most of his packages were sent as “to the blacksmith in the woods”. He used to have a name, a title and a kingdom. And then, after the dragon fire, all was left were ashes, a hunted kingless kingdom and the bitter taste of defeat.
Yet, somehow as if a miracle, there it was: “To Mister Thorin, Blacksmith from Erebor”.

But what shall they do, when a long awaited prophecy finally comes? When the war is sure, when the dragon wakes up, will love be enough?

Bilbo Baggins left Erebor, before Thorin Oakenshield’s fate was certain. For all that they shared (including their bed), the chasm between them seems too deep to bridge, even when Bilbo returns to Thorin’s side in time of need, selflessly devoting himself to the King even when he has reason to believe Thorin doesn’t feel the same for him.
A story in which our two favourite idiots manage to talk circles around each other without getting to the point, Bilbo meets Thorin at death’s door a second time, Dís is sort of bullying Thorin into happiness, and there’s a whole lot of miscommunication and world building just the way Erebor is rebuilt.
