That’s something Kerry had to accept long ago. Johnny’s way of worming himself into every inch of his life, spreading like rot over his whole word until it was all just Johnny. He stopped trying to fight it, if he ever tried in the first place.
It wasn't a gradual thing either. Johnny came crashing into his life like a runaway train, all wild ideas and loaded smiles. So completely all-consuming that by the time he realized what had happened it was already too late.

Silence hangs.
Johnny shifts his weight, a bit. Grinds his boot into the ground. The seconds drag and Nancy speaks no more. Knowing he’s itching under the weight of it.
Finally, he laughs once, short and humorless.
“Yeah, well," Johnny at least has the decency to feel guilt when he voices it, “I shoved him in the trunk and did a buck-fifty down the highway so, uh, guess that probably didn’t help him any.”
