Rory closes the book after reading the messy scrawl from the boy that broke her heart.
She’s never described herself as an angry person before, but she can feel a ball of rage in her core, threatening to escape. She shoves the book back into her bag, along with that feeling of white hot anger. Because she’s done. She meant what she said. She is not going to pine.

I never asked to be here, but here I am — moving, breathing, living a life that I don’t believe in. You may have seen me before; on the street or at work or just passing and out of habit, I’m usually smiling when it’s expected, nodding when it’s required. But I am empty. A machine running on ritual that replicates actions I’ve never owned.
You should know this: the world you cling to, the comforts you hold close as parchment, the faith you swear by are the trappings of performance. Suffering made flesh called humanity, and life itself — the cruelest joke of all — is to be born is to be condemned.
I will tell you what I remember; still, it doesn’t matter. My days, my thoughts, my failures welcome the spiral here, to the edge. Maybe to you it looks like there is something else, meaning hidden in the lines, a return to the edge; I can assure you, there isn’t.
By the end, perhaps you will see what I see: that existence is only optional in theory, awareness is a burden, that no smile no solace could save me from the knotted wisp of truth in a still, quiet mind. I’m talking to you from that edge; if you listen close enough, can you hear the silence that follows?
