He keeps notes on all the heroes and villains he admires, but his favorite is the man with the most powerful quirk in the world — the number one villain, All Might.
AU in which All Might isn’t a hero, but Midoriya is still his biggest fan.
This story was written for the DekuMight Big Bang 2018. WARNING, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING BUTTERFLY WITH ZERO CONTEXT, SERIOUSLY
While working on Kayama’s art assignment, Yagi shares his passion for sci-fi and comics with his protegé. He loans Izuku a collection of old short stories, including Bradbury’s The Sound of Thunder. The hero classes go on a field trip to the small town of Jakku, where they learn about small-town heroism. They’re met with a cold reception and on his first patrol Izuku and his group find a pair of gruesomely murdered townsfolk. An investigation begins as U.A. attempts to complete the field trip. Izuku participates in a quirk showcase for the town, during and after which he feels a terrible sense of physical dread. This feeling, clawing at his ribs, follows him back to U.A..
Over the next month, the dread and anxiety dramatically worsens, and Izuku begins experiencing the sensations of his spine being pushed out of his body and other such crippling pains. Nightmares haunt him during the night and despite everyone’s best efforts, they can find nothing wrong with Izuku and no one is ever around for his worse attacks. One night, Izuku wakes to hear something coming for him. He hides behind his door from a ghastly winged wraith, who finds him and begins ripping him apart. By the time Aizawa and his flatmates arrive, he is alone and babbling about villains. Reviewing footage and looking for evidence, they find nothing.
During an exam, Izuku experiences an attack midair and falls 4 stories. Momo’s quick thinking saves his life, but he is so absorbed in his panic that he continues fighting robots until he is forcefully put down. Throughout a series of trips to hospitals and a large number of medical exams, nothing is found(they really do try their reasonable best though). One night, worried about his friend, Yuga prepares a cheese bento to leave on Izuku’s balcony. He goes out to deliver it and witnesses Izuku’s villain phase through his window without a trace, culminating in one of the most chilling text messages ever.
The school goes on lockdown and the teachers try to chase down Butterfly, as Izuku has named it, only to be crippled by the full force of it’s dread attack. Izuku sobs and laughs maniacally at proof that he isn’t insane. It is revealed that his classmates have all been reliving their deaths in their sleep and that Katsuki destroyed evidence(he was misguided) of Butterfly weeks prior. Butterfly continues to attack the safe room, trying to get to Izuku. Izuku fights Butterfly until his classmates finally shake off Butterfly’s sleep AOE. The heroes take Izuku all around the city, luring Butterfly away from the others, until Izuku finds refuge in Yagi’s apartment. They argue, and in the meantime, Butterfly visits and Yagi talks to and cares for him. Izuku is once again attacked, saving Yagi’s life, and the news catches sight of the duel.
They formulate a plan to lure Butterfly down into a kill maze(“...This place is a tomb.” “Let’s make sure it’s not yours.” “Right.” And he descended once more into the trap he set for himself.). Butterfly assumes Izuku’s visage, setting Katsuki on edge because he knows Izuku like the back of his hand. The heroes scramble, trying to save Izuku from Butterfly as Butterfly unleashes rage, havoc, and bloodshed upon the maze. In the hospital afterwards, Butterfly attempts to destroy Izuku from the inside out using a series of mental quirks. Aizawa stops him and saves Izuku by using Erasure and waiting for Butterfly’s body and mind to fail. This traumatizes Aizawa(Chapter 31-32), as well as Yagi(Chapter 32). Butterfly had assimilated himself into Izuku, and Izuku takes some time to learn which parts of himself are him, which are Butterfly, and gradually comes to terms with his traumatic experience.

Kacchan always boasted his mythos would be something amazing. Something flashy and strong- like the screams and roars that flickered on the computer screen.Like the three synchronous roars, from the gates of hell as Endeavour unleashed hellfire, and Cerberus devoured.
Midoriya hadn't met his mythos. Even in UA.

Momo wasn't sure why it came as such a shock to her and her classmates that nitroglycerin was not, in fact, easy to control. The chemical was defined by it's instability, it's ability to go off under near any circumstances, it's powerful blows.
And yet, Katsuki had always made it look so simple. He soared through the air like it was nothing, switching between bullet-sized blasts and missile levels of firepower like most people switched channels on TV. Momo had found herself jealous of his quirk at times, unable to help wondering what it would be like to have such power at her fingertips.
Good news, she didn't have to wonder anymore. Bad news, it was absolutely terrible.
