Steve is drunk.
He doesn’t know what time it is, anymore. He remembers Robin leaving, reminds promising her he’ll be okay, but that must’ve been hours ago, now. He watches as the condensation on his beer drips onto his thigh, making the light wash denim darken, and pretends he isn’t listening in on the conversation across the room.
It’s hard to make out with the party in full swing, with U2 still blaring from the speakers and a hoard of people between them, but Steve’s gotten good at reading body language. At reading expressions. At knowing who is a threat and who isn’t, and the three talking to Eddie Munson right now?

Mike turns around and freezes in place, staring straight at Will from across the room that’s now lit up yellow. His eyes roam up and down Will’s body with a certain curiosity—a discovery, maybe, like he’s learning something new. His throat bobs as he swallows, lips parted, and his eyebrows twitch almost too subtly to see. Just a little flick upwards.
“I, uh,” Mike begins, “I can see you now.”

It’s the first time in a while that he doesn’t know what comes next. He’s dove into the water hundreds of times. Screamed as his flesh was torn apart, heard Master of Puppets in the distance and held back tears. Felt Max’s cold, small hand in his as she laid in the hospital bed. There are things that always happen, no matter how hard he tries: El doesn’t arrive in time. Eddie dies. Max is put in a coma.
Steve fails. They lose.
“Steve, how many loops have you been through?”
His head is nodding, and his eyes are watery, and Eddie has approached him like a spooked animal.
“I lost count.”
AKA: The one where Steve Harrington is stuck in a time loop, and Eddie Munson is really fucking hard to save, or: fuck Volume 2, these bitches are in love.

Mike pulls a face. "We are?"
"You sure about that?" Steve remarks incredulously.
Rolling his eyes and sighing to the invisible audience Mike wishes were here to witness this, Mike simply replies "Yeah pretty sure dude, since I was like, there."
"I don't know man, you didn't seem that broken up to me."
"We were just playing a game? Because we're friends?" And not awkward exes who can't even spend a normal car ride together. Mike doesn't get everyone's insistence that they know more about his relationship with El than he does.
"Well if you want to get her back I can give you some advice…"
Now it's Mike's turn to stare incredulously. No wonder Jonathan can't stand this guy.

“I love you,” Mike mumbles sleepily into his hair, wriggling closer. His arm winds across Will’s stomach, and Will feels the ghost of a kiss being pressed to the junction of his shoulder and neck.
Will blinks his eyes open, warmth flooding the length of his body. He shifts, twisting around to peer up at Mike, squinting. “You- what?” he murmurs, lifting an eyebrow, and Mike jolts up, peeking over his shoulder sheepishly.
“Oh,” he says, blushing as Will nudges his way to roll over onto his back, Mike hovering over him. “Sorry, I thought you were asleep.”
Will stares up at him. “You were gonna say you loved me for the first time while I was asleep?”
Mike lets out an undignified squeak, and drops his head down onto Will’s shoulder. “No.”
