Mike had to know. He needed to know for sure if Will liked someone. If Will liked him. He had thought for a moment in the car that maybe Will was really feeling the things he was saying about El, like maybe Will knew because he felt that way too. But he didn’t get the chance to press further, because Will ignored him the rest of the car ride and El’s return soon after halted all emotional talks between the two boys.
He didn’t know what he wanted Will to even say. Mike is oblivious to a lot of things, but he’s smart enough to know that the way he thinks of and interacts with Will sometimes is far past what a friend would be. He would excuse it as being like brothers, but brothers didn’t usually stare at each other’s lips and daydream about connecting them one day. Mike knew he wasn’t gay. He liked El, loved her even. But he also knew that the way he felt for Will was something special, and deep down past all of the fear and self hatred, a big part of him hoped Will would confess that he did like Mike.
After all, they’ve seen crazier things than boys who kiss boys.
