Sighing, Steve thought, would probably give off the impression that Steve was disinterested or irritated with the kid’s dilemma here, which wasn’t necessarily true, but the urge to do so boiled up so strongly. Instead though, he shrugged, slouching on the counter that separated the two of them. “I didn’t. For most of my life, I just thought staring at guys in locker rooms or on the basketball field or on TV was things that all guys do and just don’t talk about. Which is, by the way, not true.”

The fall of ‘84 changed things for Susan Hargrove. She learned of her husband’s horrible ways and she was mortified.
Billy had arrived home that night with a bruise lining his jaw, dazed and the Chief of Police in tow – all without Max. Needless to say, Neil had not been happy. The moment Neil was sure there were no prying ears, he turned on Billy.
And punched his son without a blink.
Susan had gasped, caught off guard, while Billy just inhaled sharply.
“Sweatheart,” Neil chided, “Me and Billy are going to have a quick talk. Why don’t you get dinner sorted in the meantime?”
Feeling sick to her stomach she’d left.
Susan had made a decision that night. She had to get out, and she couldn’t go alone.

"Aren’t they always like that, though?" Shiro piped up, stuffing a slice of bread in his mouth.
"Yes, but they are especially so as of late." Coran lifted his pointer finger to punctuate his statement.
Alurra nodded. "He's right," she said matter-of-factly. She looked up to meet Shiro's gaze. "Like for instance, the other day..."

“Daddy!” Steve watched the boy exclaim, eyes alight on Billy. His heart soared for some unknown reason in his chest. “I found you! I found you and Papa.”
Steve watched the confused look over take his boyfriend, well maybe not boyfriend, hookup, fuck—Billy’s face as those blue eyes then found his, utterly bewildered.
He shrugged his shoulders, still processing what he’d heard the boy call each of them, before scanning Max, who like her brother, gazed slack jawed.
El continued watching the boy, head still tilted. She shook it as if coming to an understanding and then turned to face all of them before replying with certainty: “Not a demodog.”

Or during the winter of 1985, after the Battle of Starcourt has ended and the Gate has been closed, a healing Billy, Steve, and the Party encounter Steve and Billy’s elementary age child, Teddy, from the future thanks to what they realize is a brief tear in the Upside Down. In 1986, after Vecna put Nancy in a trance, Steve stays behind to help her out but the gate in Eddie’s trailer collapses before Steve can make it through. Now Hawkins' greatest babysitter has to think fast or get stuck in the Upside Down.
Left behind in a hostile world and only one other of Vecna's gates open, Steve has to risk it all for this one shot at escape. But as the Upside Down shakes with another earthquake, time becomes disaligned and once Steve is finally on the other side, he realizes that he’s been spit out back in 1985.
But not just that, out of all possible nights of that fateful year, Steve arrived just in time to intersect Billy Hargrove on his way to a date out of town.
