Мог ли Сюлань надеяться, что в холодных стенах Запретного города встретит человека, который заслужит его признание: «Если я слово – произнесите меня. Если я глина – сомните и лепите меня. Если я тушь – растирайте меня. Я материал в ваших руках, есть только ваша воля».
    В описании пыток, около-медицинских процедур и нравственности автор опирается на историческую матчасть и даже приукрашивает ее, чтобы не шокировать в первую очередь себя проявлениями и описаниями слишком дикими и отвратительными для современного человека.
